Why this matters
A local castle; wider significance not recorded.
What is recorded here
Situated in low-lying ground, the site consisted of a mound similar to Castleguard Motte (Dawson's Demesne, LH017-012001-) according to Tempest (1952b, part III, 147) who said that it was levelled about one hundered years before he remarked on it. It is also referred to in the OS Letters as being a small fort called 'the Liss' about a quarter of a mile NE of Ardee (Anon. 1922, 137).
The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
