Castle Hill is a scheduled monument in the Test Valley where the Fortescue family lived quietly for two centuries before Hugh Clinton transformed the estate into a grand Palladian dream. He built temples, caves and bridges across the land, shaping the river and rocks into a stage for his own ambition. When he died childless in 1751, his half-brother Matthew erased much of that sharp grandeur, replacing it with romantic lakes and cascades that still breathe through the valley.
