Bletchingley Castle stands as a ruined D-shaped ringwork in Tandridge, built around a massive inner ward and a large masonry hall with square stair turrets. Excavations revealed severe burning throughout the structure, suggesting violent destruction rather than gradual decay. A coin of William Rufus buried in early rubbish dates the construction to the late eleventh century, while pottery marks its abandonment by the late twelfth. The castle rose quickly, served a local lord, and vanished in fire, leaving only stones and memory behind.
