This blue commemorative plaque records: Thameside Metropolitan Borough Sergeant James Hargreaves D.C.M. 1906-1998 Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal for courage and leadership in Italy in 1945 Colour Sergeant William Yarwood Bebbington D.C.M. 1916-1943 Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery and leadership in France in 1940 Both soldiers were born in Ashton and served in the 9th Battalion The Manchester Regiment Unveiled in 27th March 2007 by members of the Hargreaves and Bebbington families Recorded plaque organisation: Tameside Metropolitan Borough.
Sergeant James Hargreaves and Colour Sergeant William Yarwood Bebbington were both awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for their bravery and leadership during World War II; Hargreaves in Italy in 1945 and Bebbington in France in 1940, serving in the 9th Battalion The Manchester Regiment.
