This blue commemorative plaque records: Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC 1920-1944 Awarded the George Cross (GC), the highest award for conspicuous courage out of battle. Corporal Horsfield was born in Hyde, served in the 9th Manchester Regiment, and was seconded to the SAS. He is the only Tameside citizen to have received this award following his gallant rescue efforts that resulted in his own loss of life in Italy on 18 August 1944. Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC was a member of the SAS who received the George Cross for his gallant rescue efforts in Italy, where he lost his life on August 18, 1944. He is remembered as the only Tameside citizen to have been awarded this high honor for conspicuous courage out of battle.
