Buckton Castle stood on a steep sandstone ridge at the eastern edge of Cheshire, guarding the Tame Valley with a stone curtain wall and deep ditch before vanishing into heather and peat. It may never have been finished, yet people kept returning to the buried ridge, some digging for rumoured treasure and others lighting beacons or building decoys during wars. The castle still holds that boundary between regions and centuries, waiting beneath the moor for someone to imagine the garrison watching the valley below.
