This blue commemorative plaque records: The Dun Cow There was a pub called The Dun Cow on this site from at least 1834 The present building has one of the most stunningly ornate backbars in Britain and was designed in 1901 by Benjamin Ferdinand Simpson (1860-1940) Restored for the people of Sunderland in 2014. Benjamin Ferdinand Simpson was a prominent British architect known for his work on ornate pub interiors; he designed the elaborately decorated backbar of The Dun Cow in Sunderland in 1901, which is considered one of the most ornate in Britain.
