This black commemorative plaque records: SONACS. In 1957, allegedly to reduce the cost of a new road bridge at this place, national and local authorities combined to bring about the abandonment of the then derelict canal. Through the vision, vigilance and determination of the Stratford upon Avon Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association that attempt was defeated. Between 1961 and 1964, under the auspices of the National Trust, volunteers laboured and thus restored the waterway to navigability. It was the first canal to be so rescued and revived. The waterway was ceremonially reopened on 11th July 1964 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

The Stratford upon Avon Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association successfully preserved and restored the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, making it the first canal to be revived through volunteer efforts in Britain. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the conservation of Britain's industrial heritage and inspired similar restoration projects nationwide.
