Stony Island is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is a man-made island, likely built with soil, stone and wood to raise a home above wet land. People may have lived there when shallow water surrounded the island and a narrow causeway led across. The name suggests stones still mark the place where a small house stood above the lake.
