Loch Dochart Castle stands as a medieval ruin beside Stirling, marked only by an unassigned coin hoard and no surviving hall. The lake may have swallowed rooms, ladders and living people, while the coins suggest trade or tribute reached this remote water. Dochart gives the castle its name and the castle gives the dochart its edge. What is missing is the point: a castle needs a keep, a gate and a reason to build.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Loch Dochart Castle as Castle (medieval), Coin Hoard (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Loch Dochart Castle was built by the MacDougall clan in the 13th century and later held by the Campbell family in the 14th century. It is remembered for its strategic location controlling access to the loch and its role in the power struggles between Highland clans.
