This blue commemorative plaque records: The Grange. Formerly the Swann Inn, this building held pride of place among Stevenage inns. Samuel Pepys stayed here in 1667 and it was reputed to be the first stop for couples from London, on their way north to Gretna Green.
Samuel Pepys PRS was a prominent naval administrator and is renowned for his diary providing detailed accounts of life in 17th century England, including the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.
