Standing stone in Killowen

Standing stone

Why this matters

Probably dating to the Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had a ritual or territorial function, possibly associated with the nearby rath. Its orientation and broken condition suggest it could have been part of a wider ceremonial landscape, though specific folklore or use is not recorded.

In level pasture, to the N of Kenmare Bay. This standing stone (0.9m x 0.2m; H 0.7m) has a sloping top, is roughly rectangular in plan and is orientated E-W. Parts of it seem to have been broken off. A rath (KE093-017----) lies c. 20m to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
