Standing stone in Garranereagh (muskerry West By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Garranereagh in Muskerry West By. holds a subrectangular standing stone rising 1.28 metres from level pasture. Its long axis points NNE-SSW, presenting a broad 1.1 metre face rather than a thin blade. The stone may have marked a boundary, honoured a ancestor or guided travellers through open countryside. People likely passed it for generations before records preserved its shape.
In level pasture. Stone (H 1.28m; 1.1m x 0.25m) is subrectangular in plan, long axis NNE-SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
