Standing stone in Drombeg (muskerry East By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Muskerry East Bay holds a vanished standing stone on a NNW-facing slope, remembered only in local information and absent when inspected. That absence is not a failure of imagination; it is a record of loss. The stone may have marked a boundary, a burial, a meeting place or a warning. Someone removed it, perhaps to clear pasture, build a wall or erase an unwanted witness. The empty slope continues the story because forgetting is not the same as understanding.
In pasture, on a NNW-facing slope. According to local information, a standing stone that was situated in this location has been removed. A subsequent inspection of the area failed to locate this possible standing stone. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
