Standing stone in Cousane

Standing stone

Why this matters

Probably dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had a ritual or territorial function, possibly linked to early farming communities in the region. Its orientation and location suggest it could have been part of a wider ceremonial landscape, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.

What is recorded here

In pasture, on a NW-facing slope overlooking the valley of the Owvane River. This standing stone (H 1.25m; 1.2m x 0.65m) is roughly rectangular in plan and section and is orientated NE-SW. The top of a possible packing-stone is visible beside the base of the stone at the SE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
