Standing stone in Coumroe

Standing stone

Why this matters

Probably dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have been part of a ritual or funerary landscape associated with the nearby stone circle. Its placement on a ridge suggests a possible alignment or symbolic function, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.

What is recorded here

Situated on a slight ridge in a poorly drained boggy valley in an upland area with a stone circle (TN019-046001) 60m to the NE. A recumbent slab (L 0.8m; dims. 0.6m x 0.4m) resting on smaller support stones in a slight hollow. Possible collapsed standing stone. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
