What is recorded here

The precise location of the standing stone within the townland of Cloonkeen has not been identified. Described by Johnson (1998, 108) as follows; 'Forestry roads run up to general area of site. Long walk across recently planted bogland. Will be impossible once trees mature. Site was identified while investigating an enclosure to south. In partially cut-over bog, now planted (mostly with spruces - some ash in places). Exact position is difficult to map because of the open landscape but is c. 350m due east of stream marked on Ordnance Survey six-inch map. Stone appears to be fixed in position in c. 20cm of bog but didn't ascertain whether it's set in soil beneath bog or not. It is possible that stone was uprighted recently. Reported to Megalithic Survey for further investigation. Access to the site will be impossible once trees mature. Stone (1.65m H; 0.85m W; 0.43m D) of quartzite? which is bleached white (bog leeching?) and stands upright in c. 20cm of cut-away bog. (Nearby uncut bog is c. 1.5m deep.) Fresh damage scar on south-west face reveals grey, coarse-grained stone with quartz inclusions. Long axis is aligned north-west/south-east. Two irregular stones lie prostrate nearby'. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
