Standing stone in Carnbane

Standing stone

Why this matters

Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance, possibly linked to the nearby cairn. Its alignment and placement suggest a possible astronomical or ceremonial function, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.

What is recorded here

Situated at the crest of the NW-facing summit of Carnbane West and c. 32m NW of Cairn D (ME015-003008-). This is a rectangular quartz stone (dims of base 0.85m x 0.55-0.65m; L 2m) lying prone and aligned WNW-ESE. Its stump is set in the ground at its E end and Conwell (1866, 361; 1873, 50) says was once upright. When it was upright it would be visible over a wide area SW-N. This monument is not accessible to the public at the moment. (Cooney 2000, 162) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 10 January 2019
