Why this matters

Linked to St Patrick, the well is traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, reflecting the widespread veneration of the saint at early Christian sites in Ireland. The proximity to an early ecclesiastical enclosure suggests a long history of religious use and possible continuity from monastic to popular devotional practices.

What is recorded here

In pasture; c. 30m SE of early ecclesiastical enclosure (LI037-025003-). Spring well now contained within circular concrete tank, with concrete footpath surrounding it. Circular area (diam. 6.4m) around this is enclosed by concrete-block wall. Entrance via gate to S; just inside gate is shrine with modern near-life-size statue of St Patrick. Well visited on 17th March, and 'celebrated for curing blindness' (Ó Danachair (1955, 204); legend associates it with Leacht Phadraig, located c. 1,000m to NW (LI037-023---).
