This blue commemorative plaque records: Arthur Holmes 1890 - 1965. In this house lived Arthur Holmes. Internationally renowned geologist, lecturer at Imperial College, London, became Professor of Geology at Durham University in 1925 and at the University of Edinburgh in 1943.
Arthur Holmes was a pioneering geologist who made significant contributions to the fields of geophysics and geochronology, notably for his work on radioactive dating techniques and the concept of mantle convection. His academic career included professorships at Durham University and the University of Edinburgh, where he influenced generations of geologists.
