Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records North Shortcleuch as Cairnfield (period Unknown), Pen (medieval) - (post Medieval), Sheepfold (post Medieval), Unenclosed Platform Settlement (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Prehistoric cairnfield with an unenclosed platform settlement; it reflects early land use and communal burial or ritual practices in the Neolithic or Bronze Age. Its association with later medieval and post-medieval features suggests long-term occupation of the landscape.
