Craignethan Castle is a ruined stone stronghold built in the first half of the 16th century by James Hamilton of Finnart, an accomplished military engineer who wanted to display his talents in domestic and defensive design. The castle changed hands repeatedly as Hamilton politics shifted, drawing James V, Regent Arran, Mary, and Moray into its chambers, chambers that may have echoed with clandestine conversations, forced surrenders, and temporary refuge before battles. Its defences were never fully tested in open war, yet the building remained a prize worthy of royal attention, garrisoned, stripped of its clock and chapel silverwork, and surrendered again and again as allegiance swung.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Craignethan Castle as Palstave (bronze)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Craignethan Castle was built by the Haliburton family in the late 15th century and is remembered as an excellent example of a defensive tower house in the Scottish Borders. It is important for its architectural features and historical association with Border Reivers.
