Parkhall emerged beside the Manuel Burn when Archibald Crawford granted land to his relative David, creating a cadet branch that survived until the Livingstons absorbed it in 1647. The name likely preserves a hauch, a bright meadow strip where water and grass still touch, rather than a grand hall. Later owners layered mills, coal rights and muir shares onto that same ribbon of land, turning a side branch into a substantial estate.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Parkhall as Castle (medieval), Hollow Way (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
