Cambuslang, Monkcastle Drive

Barrage Balloon Site (second World War)

What is recorded here

Monkcastle Drive in Cambuslang anchored barrage balloons during the second World War, lifting rubber shadows above ordinary rooftops to snag enemy aircraft before they reached populated land. The balloons needed constant human attention, ropes pulling taut in wind while crews watched for sparks, snags and sudden drops. They turned a residential street into a quiet defence line, reminding people that the sky itself had become a battlefield.
