Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Horse Law as Cairn (prehistoric), Marker Cairn (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Prehistoric cairn, likely Neolithic or Bronze Age in origin, with a later post-Medieval marker cairn. Its significance lies in its dual function as both an ancient burial or ritual monument and a more recent territorial or waymark feature.
