Douglas Castle anchored the Douglas family in South Lanarkshire from the thirteenth century until the nineteenth century, though repeated destruction left only a corner tower of the seventeenth-century building. Sir James Douglas reclaimed the first stronghold during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and the brutal Palm Sunday storm still echoes in the name Douglas' larder. Later royal anger, fire and demolition stripped the place further, yet the remaining tower still stands near the village like a stubborn reminder that the family kept returning to the same ground.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Douglas Castle as Axehead (jadeite)(period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Douglas Castle was a stronghold held by the powerful Douglas family, prominent in Scottish history from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Wars of Scottish Independence and the subsequent political struggles between the Douglases and the Scottish crown.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
