Slapton Castle

Slapton Castle is an Iron Age hillfort where a modern lane still cuts through the ancient ramparts, proving that human traffic has always favoured the direct route. The northern bank rises twelve to fifteen feet above a ditch thirty feet deep, while ploughing has flattened the southern defence into faint memory. A farmer levelled what remained half a century ago, yet the northern point still holds its shape against the sky. The castle endures as a long, bruised ridge rather than a proud wall, marking the place where human impatience repeatedly redrew the boundary between ownership and oblivion.
