Bretby Castle was a fortified manor occupied from the 13th to the 17th century, where John Segrave received royal licence to build defences in 1300. Its massive outer bank still rises five metres above a sunken driveway that once guided visitors past two courtyards and large service buildings. The Segrave family rose through royal service, suffered exile in Gascony, and left behind a layered estate where kitchens, chapels and farms changed shape across three hundred years.
