Maybole Castle is a 16th-century L-shaped fortress built for the Earls of Cassillis, featuring seven-foot-thick walls and circular corner turrets that still guard the High Street. Legend claims an earl imprisoned the Countess of Cassillis there after killing John Faa, though history records Margaret Kennedy writing from the castle in 1578 to order velvet and a locket. The building survived a deadly 1601 feud and Victorian alterations, transforming from a violent noble seat into a listed heritage landmark.
