Dead Knowe, Castlehill

Dun (prehistoric)(possible)

What is recorded here

Dead Knowe, Castlehill may be a prehistoric dun, though that remains a possibility rather than a certainty. The hill itself is certain: a rounded knob of earth in South Ayrshire that has watched goats, storms and human folly for centuries. If people built there, they chose height and visibility, which means they wanted to be seen or to see others. The knowe keeps that much of the truth even when it withholds the rest.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dead Knowe, Castlehill as Dun (prehistoric)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
