Dalquharran Castle stands near Dailly, South Ayrshire, where Robert Adam built a symmetric mansion for Thomas Kennedy around 1790. The new house dropped its roof in 1967 to escape local taxation, leaving the old castle ruins nearby and exposing both buildings to the sky. Adam’s oval dining room and round bastion turret still face the Water of Girvan, preserving the shape of a home that stopped paying taxes before it stopped existing.
