Ardstinchar Castle was a stone stronghold built by Hugh Kennedy of Ardstinchar in the mid-15th century, rising on a rocky hill above the River Stinchar. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there in 1563, perhaps walking the half turret walkway still visible today before the feud and decay took hold. By 1770 the castle had fallen into disrepair, and its stone was quarried to build a bridge and local houses, leaving only the keep and fragmentary walls behind.

Ardstinchar Castle was built by the Maxwell family in the 16th century and is remembered as a historic stronghold associated with the powerful Lowland Scottish clan.
