Dunure Castle is a ruined stone stronghold on a Carrick coast promontory where Clan Kennedy held power from the 13th to 17th century. In 1570, Gilbert Kennedy tortured Allan Stewart in the Black Vault, roasting his feet over a brazier until the man signed away abbey lands. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed three days in August 1563 before leaving for Ardmillan Castle. The yew-tree fort still watches the small harbour, keeping its sharp edges and dangerous memory intact.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunure Castle as Castle (14th Century) - (17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Dunure Castle was built by the Boyd family in the 14th century and later held by the Montgomeries, Earls of Eglinton, in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is important as a well-preserved example of a coastal Scottish castle and as a historic seat of powerful noble families in Ayrshire.
