Brigend Castle is a ruined tower house overlooking the River Doon, where Montgomerie lairds lived from the sixteenth century until the estate passed to the Crawford family. The remains hold a barrel-vaulted cellar and a square room, yet the thin walls and modest size suggest a domestic residence more than a martial fortress. Woodland still surrounds the site, preserving the quiet tension between a private estate and the public desire to walk among stones that have watched the river flow for centuries.
