Cynwit Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey earthwork in Somerset, built after the conquest of 1066 and still standing as a scheduled monument. Its substantial mound and attached bailey mark it as early Norman military architecture in the South West, though little modern archaeology has touched the site. The castle may have watched roads, taxed travellers or simply frightened neighbours into obedience. Whatever it did, it did it in soil, not stone, and the soil has kept the shape while forgetting the names.
