This blue commemorative plaque records: The Right Hon. Margaret Bondfield CH., LLD., JP., 1873-1953 The First Woman Cabinet Minister 1929-1931 was born in this town Shop worker, Christian, Socialist, Trades Unionist, she devoted her life to improving the lot of the downtrodden. Presented to the town of Chard on the 750th anniversary of its first charter by U.S.D.A.W and the Labour Party Unveiled by the Rt. Hon. Barbara Castle M.E.P. On the 20th September 1985
Margaret Bondfield was a pioneering British politician, recognized as the first woman to serve in the UK Cabinet (1929-1931), and dedicated her life to labor rights and social reform.
