Graveyard

What is recorded here

Located on the summit of Skreen Hill with wide views out in every direction; the S-N ridge of Tara is the most prominent feature c. 3.5km to the W. The early monastery at Achall, which was later known as Scrín Colum Chille, and the medieval parish church (ME032-047003-) that supplanted it are within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 55m E-W at S to c. 85m E-W at N; c. 65-75m N-S) defined by masonry walls. Dopping (1682-5) says the graveyard was enclosed at that time, half with a masonry wall and half with an earthen bank (Ellison 1972, 6). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 27 January, 2015
