Motte and bailey castle with associated remains of a medieval village and ridge and furrow cultivation, 200m west of St Peter's Church stands in Shropshire, England. The earthworks still trace the shape of a defended home and the fields that fed it. People may have built the mound, dug the ditch, and planted rows that cut the soil into ridges. The castle has lost its timber halls and stone chambers, but the ground remembers the hands that shaped it.
The National Heritage List for England records Motte and bailey castle with associated remains of a medieval village and ridge and furrow cultivation, 200m west of St Peter's Church as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the 12th century, the motte and bailey castle was likely constructed by a local Norman lord to establish control over the surrounding area following the Norman Conquest. It is important as an example of early medieval military architecture and as evidence of the settlement patterns and agricultural practices of the time.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
