Holdgate Castle is a Norman motte and bailey in Shropshire where a church and a small college of secular clergy developed inside or beside the defences before the castle fell into abandonment in the 17th century. The steep mound still rises above the village, marked by a buried ditch, farm buildings and the memory of Helgot, the landowner whose name the place still carries. What is lost is easy to imagine: a residence, a chapel, a kitchen garden and the ordinary noise of people living under a castle that outlived its masters.
