Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Seltan (mcdonald)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a local story, not a proven fact. They are ancient human places where memory has thinned into myth. This is a real ringfort in Seltan, with a circular platform and a shallow ditch. The fairy name is the strange part: people stopped knowing its human life and gave the gap to the unseen.
Situated on a N-facing slope. This is a rush and scrub-covered circular platform (diam. 28.5m N-S; 27.5m E-W; H 0.2m) surrounded by a slight reed-filled fosse (Wth 1.8m). The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
