This commemorative plaque records: Mermaid Fountain. This exotic fountain was commissioned by Walter Connard (1859-1946) to stand in front of his Palladium Picture Palace which opened in 1914. He had earlier started his jewellery business in 1883 which his descendants continue to run. The oldest family firm on Lord Street Recorded plaque organisation: Southport Civic Society.
Walter Connard, a jeweller whose business became the oldest family firm on Lord Street, commissioned the Mermaid Fountain, symbolizing his wealth and contribution to local culture through his Picture Palace cinema.
