Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Scrahanard

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and Scrahanard still drop into fairy forts, though men stopped building them centuries ago. The ring at Scrahanard keeps its shape in pasture, a shallow bowl with a stone-faced bank and one narrow entrance pointing east-northeast. It is the kind of place where the boundary between worlds becomes practical, not philosophical.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Circular area (28.5m E-W; 27m N-S) defined by earthen bank (H 2.6m); scarp to S with slight internal lip. Bank stone-faced internally to height of 1.5m; berm above stone facing. Entrance (Wth 1.8m) to ENE, remains of stone facing on N side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
