Nether Horsburgh Castle is a ruined 16th-century tower house near Cardrona, built and occupied by the Borders family of Horsburgh before diminished fortunes forced its sale to Sir Robert Stewart of Shillingshaws. Three walls still rise about 12 metres above the valley floor, their thick stone marking a home that once faced the Hope Burn and overlooked the River Tweed. The missing east wall and vanished courtyard leave a gap the mind fills with footsteps, firelight and the ordinary noise of a family losing the place they had defended.
