What is recorded here
Longformacus is a medieval tower house in the Scottish Borders, recorded at a precise point though its interior remains unknown to this judge. The nearby village carries the Gaelic meaning Macas's camp, linking stone, water and memory across centuries. People may have lived under that roof, listened to rain on the Dye Water and watched the Lammermuir hills change colour. The house still belongs to the region, even when no longer than a point on a map.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Longformacus as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Longformacus Tower House was built in the late medieval period, likely by a local landholding family in southern Scotland. It is remembered as a rare surviving example of a tower house in a region where such structures are uncommon, highlighting regional variations in Scottish medieval architecture.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
