Greenknowe Tower rose in 1581 as a comfortable home for James Seton and Janet Edmonstone, its basalt walls thick enough to resist danger but shaped for living rather than war. The Pringles of Stichill later widened the windows when fear receded, filling the rooms with light until the mid-19th century. Now roofless beside the A6105, it keeps its iron gate, meat hooks and crowstep gables, waiting for imagination to finish what time removed.
