What is recorded here

Buccleuch died before the 1793 foundation, yet the valley still repeats the claim because the Holm needed a centre where weavers, cloggers and farmers could stop scattering through the Reiver hills. That is why Newcastleton keeps a planned shape instead of growing like an old market town: it was made as an answer to hardship, not as a monument to pride. The border between invention and memory becomes interesting exactly there, because a place can carry a false name and still tell the truth about the people who needed it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Newcastleton as Findspot (period Unassigned), Spindle Whorl (period Unassigned)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
