Hermitage Castle stands in the Scottish Borders as a stone wound where men were starved, betrayed and killed for the right to hold it. Douglas imprisoned Ramsay inside and let hunger finish what ambition began. Dacre tore timber away and raised stone, believing strength would answer the violence, but the castle kept giving itself to whoever could be cruel enough to take it.
