Cessford Castle rose around 1450 as the principal Kerr stronghold, its thirteen-foot walls and six storeys defying easy capture. English troops needed ladders during the 1523 siege, and the Earl of Surrey admitted it might have resisted indefinitely had defence continued. The family fled in 1650, leaving behind a stone skeleton still angular against the Borders sky.

The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Cessford Castle was a 13th-century tower house built by the de Vesci family, later held by the Humes of Cessford. It is remembered for its strategic role in the border region between England and Scotland during the Middle Ages.
