Castleside is a modern farmstead in the Scottish Borders, recorded in the National Record of the Historic Environment with a point accurate to the nearest metre. The name suggests a castle long vanished, yet the site still lives as working farmland rather than a ruined monument. The gap between the grand name and the ordinary function is the interesting part: a place called castle may never have held one, or may have lost it so completely that only the name remains.
