Old Thirlestane Castle is the ruined peel tower a mile south-east of the grand Thirlestane seat, built by the Maitlands after they acquired the Lauder lands in 1587. Sir John Maitland constructed the newer square keep beside the Leader Water, leaving the older tower to decay until it became a ghost of the family’s earlier power. The two structures still mark the same valley, one forgotten and one celebrated, proving that greatness often requires abandoning what came before.

Old Thirlestane Castle, near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, was built in the late 15th century by the powerful Douglas family, later held by the Scotts of Thirlestane. It is important as a historic seat of a prominent noble family and for its well-preserved Renaissance architecture.
